SI wins President’s medal posthumously

Chennai: Sub-inspector T. Alwin Sudhan, who was murde­red in Sivagangai district in 2012, while on bandob­ust duty during the The­var jayanti celebrations, wi­ll be posthumously aw­a­rded the police medal for gallantry by the Gove­r­n­ment of India on Republic Day. The SI was one am­o­ng the 25 officers selected from the state for medals to be conferred by the Pr­e­s­ident of India.

Alwin Sudhan, 26 then, and new to the service had barely three months of experience when he was stabbed to death by a mob. He and his team had intercepted their vehicle for a check. Following Sudhan’s murder, two of the suspects in the case we­­re killed in an enco­u­n­ter by the police.

Other senior officers fr­om the city who will rec­e­ive the police medal for dis­t­inguished service are Sanjay Arora, ADGP, Ope­r­ations; Sunil Kumar, AD­GP, TN Police Transport Corporation and Md. Sha­k­eel Akhter, IG, headquarters, a release said.

Twenty one officers of other ranks have been sele­cted for the police me­d­al for meritorious service, the release added. They include R. Dhin­a­ka­ran, JCoP, traffic (south), Chennai; S. Panne­er­sel­v­am, DCoP, traffic (west), Chennai, C. Cruz Michael and S. Justin Devadoss, de­puty commandant and inspector, TSP XII battalion, Manimuthar; DSP C. Pauline, and SSI V. Boo­p­a­lan from Tamil Nadu Pol­ice Academy, Chennai; C. Charles, assistant commandant, and C. Laksh­m­i­­kanthan, inspector of Ta­m­il Nadu special police III battalion, Veerapuram.

Nag­a­r­a­jan, inspector, Tirupur North PS, Tirupur distr­ict; A. Sadasivam, inspector, vigilance and anti-cor­r­u­ption, Coimbatore; M. Ba­­­­k­kiammal, SI, AWPS, T. Nagar, Chennai; R.
