When Baby Doll went viral

This crooning beauty has worked with dr Zeus on songs with a touch of sufi and hindi pop.

This modern classical singer Kanika Kapoor is an inspiring all-rounder. Often seen among the front-row guests at Italian designer Alberta Ferretti’s couture shows in Milan, the self-confessed fashion fanatic says that she plans to take in a slew of shows by top-notch international fashion brands and designers, including Fendi and Emilio Pucci among several others. “I’m friends with several fashion designers of both international and national repute. I am like an Indian muse for several Italian designers and several top designers call me as a front row invitee for their shows,” shares the young singer.
After delivering some popular hits, an upcoming out-and-out ‘masala’ number Baby Doll, which has already crossed 2 million views, Kanika believes will surely strengthen her toehold in Bollywood. “Within a week of its online launch, the song starring Sunny Leone from Ragini MMS 2 has managed to create a huge stir. The song has not just crossed 2 million views online, but is also en route to becoming a chartbuster. Ekta liked my voice and chose me as she was looking for an urban Punjabi voice and I fit the bill,” she says.
After the huge international success Jugni Ji, her career is at its peak as the singer has once again collaborated with international music producer, Dr Zeus to work on new material and has several Bollywood projects in her kitty. “Jugni Ji when released was available as a free download and went on to become one of the biggest singles of 2012. Zeus and I have recently worked together for over 17 songs and in the next few weeks, I’ll be releasing them as singles. I am also collaborating with an Arab artiste,” adds Kanika.
Fame has not come easy for this talented singer. Sharing her share of struggles in her personal life, Kanika says, “Growing up in Lucknow and studying music for almost 12 years in India, it was not easy to shift my base to London. I was skeptical about pursuing my passion over there. I got married at 18, when I was growing as a singer. I gave up my career post my marriage! Unfortunately, things did not work out between my husband and me. I got divorced when I was still quite young and being new to London and raising three kids was difficult. But with God’s grace, my family has been supportive of my career choice and have acted as my pillars of strength. I finally decided to take up singing once again in a full-fledged fashion and here.”
Struggles in both personal and professional lives don’t seem to have dampened the spirits of this lively singer. “Persistence and hardwork is what pays in the long run. The whole world was laughing at me when I returned to music, after a long hiatus and people constantly kept passing sarcastic comments. I took criticisms in a positive manner and ensured that I don’t give up. I kept saying, ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’ and kept chasing my passion.”
The singer emphasises on the philosophy of ‘quality and not quantity’ and looks forward for a bright and promising future.
