Abhi’s Cutting Edge

Since the film is a concept-oriented one, editing was tough says Abhinav

Young Abhinav Sunder Nayak makes his debut as film editor of the much anticipated bilingual, Vai Moodi Pesavum (in Tamil) aka Samsaram Aarogyathinu Hanikaram (Malayalam), starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nazriya Nasim. This is Abhinav’s first outing with a feature film.

The young man from Kozhikode has directed nine short films and has worked as a freelance editor for short films and corporate videos as well. Abhinav, who worked as an assistant director to Vineeth Sreenivasan on Thira, says, “Editing a bilingual is both tough and challenging. While doing the rough editing, I edited Tamil and Malayalam versions simultaneously."

"But when I was working on the final product, I worked on the Tamil first and then the Malayalam. Since the film is a concept-oriented one, editing was tough. The second half of the film was more difficult to edit than the first.”

Abhinav, who has a Konkani father and Keralite mother, says that working with the Vai Moodi crew was in itself a big learning experience.

“Director Balaji, who is an editor himself, didn’t pressurise me at all. Aware that I was new to the job he offered me a good atmosphere to work in. Balaji wanted me to edit the film from the perspective of a third person.”

“He did not allow me to watch the shooting. But I travelled with the crew and it was a great experience for a newcomer like me.”

The teaser of the film is out and is getting good responses from Kollywood and Mollywood.

“Yes, creating a different teaser where Dulquer is shown sans his mouth was quite challenging. Now, I am waiting for the trailer to release,” says Abhinav, who admits that he had a great time editing the film.

As for his upcoming projects he says, “Talks are on for a Malayalam project and two Tamil projects as well.”
