Vladimir Putin calls Manmohan Singh, thanks him

New Delhi’s backing for Mr Putin’s actions with regard to the Black Sea region came during a 20-minute telephonic conversation
New Delhi: As western powers raged against Russia on Tuesday as it announced Crimea’s ‘reunification’ with it, India threw in its lot with Russian President, Vladimir Putin, while still attempting to walk the diplomatic tight-rope.
New Delhi’s backing for Mr Putin’s actions with regard to the Black Sea region came during a 20-minute telephonic conversation that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with the Russian leader late this evening after the latter called him.
Earlier in the day, President Putin while addressing a joint meeting of the Russian Parliament hadsaid, “We highly appreciate India’s restraint and objectivity.” China was the only other country that got similar appreciation from the Russian leader in his speech.
The ministry of external affairs in a statement late on Tuesday night said the Prime Minister in his conversation with the Russian President “emphasised the consistent position India had on the issues of unity and territorial integrity of countries”.
