Elections 2014: Supreme Court gives vote to Defence personnel

The court criticised the Election Commission for being rigid

New Delhi: The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that defence personnel stationed in peace areas can cast their votes as general voters in constituencies where they are posted. The court also criticised the Election Commission for being “rigid” and denying service personnel their right to vote.

The court directed the Election Commission to register military personnel posted at peace stations as “general voters” and to allow them to vote in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

“This (order) is meant for such service personnel posted at peace stations on January 1, 2014, and continues to be posted till date,” the court clarified in its interim order.
The defence ministry will help the EC in this regard.
