Should Srinivasan be allowed to take over as ICC president?
Should the beleaguered BCCI chief N.Srinivasan become the head of ICC? This question was raised as the Supreme Court of India asked N.Srinivasan to step down as the BCCI president. The suggestion was made so that a fair probe in IPL fixing scandal can take place. However, that may not have any direct implications on Srinivasan taking over as the chairman of the ICC.
However, Srinivasan may face opposition from the other two members of ‘ Big Three' if he becomes the ICC chairman. According to the earlier plans, England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia were in agreement with N.Srinivasan becoming the head of the revamped ICC. But, with Srinivasan no longer being the BCCI presidnet, the ECB and CA may change their minds and would prefer a different personnel to head the apex cricket body.
When asked about Srinivasan's chances to be the head of ICC following he stepped down as BCCI president, one of the influential members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India told PTI, " As far as the ICC constitution goes, Srinivasan is a BCCI nominee. The first chairman would be from BCCI, whether it is Mr Srinivasan or someone else. Now it will be an interesting situation if he is no longer the BCCI president. May be the members will have to do a re-think."
While it is clear that that Srinivsan's chance to lead ICC is in jeopardy, the BCCI still hold the right of nominating their candidate who would become ICC president starting this June. While three of BCCI's VP were against the idea of Srnivasan continuing as the BCCI president, that may not influence their decision to back his nomination as the ICC chief.
So, while the moral obligations or the opposition from ECB and CA can prevent Srinivasan to take over as ICC head, the chances of Srinivasan emerging as the new ICC president can’t be completely ruled out.
