It’s 'Man vs Wild'

A workshop by Survival Con taught people how to survive in extreme conditions

A three day workshop was recently held in the city on surviving in the wild and in extreme conditions.

Arranged by Survival Con, the workshop taught participants life-saving skills like extracting water from green leaves, finding food from natural resources and also how to communicate in emergencies using a HAM Radio.

One of the participants, Bhumika Kaushal, a marketing professional from Delhi, says, “This workshop is enriching as it imparts team spirit and leadership qualities, which are important for my professional growth too. For many tasks we participants worked as a team, like building our own shelter, placing tents etc.”

Elaborating on the techniques taught at the workshop, Diyanat Ali, GHAC says, “For extracting water from leaves, one of the technique used is to dig a pit, fill it with leaves, making it a cup shape; then cover with a plastic which retains moisture and put a small stone on the plastic so that the water droplets fall on the leaves. Keep it for three to four hours. With the evaporation, there will be a glass of water which is enough for one’s survival.”

“For making fire, rub two dried bamboo sticks till it turns red hot. Later use tinder (any material which catches fire), blow air and then it will catch fire. It comes with a lot of practice.”

Alok Vijyant, director, National Security, Government of India, says, “Need for survivability is an option exercised by situations not in the control of an individual. How to live in such crisis situations when nothing works for you is the skill set that this conference intends to build.”

About the mission of Survival Con, Diyanat Ali says, “The training was conducted for a group of volunteers from all walks of life and all parts of the country, who in future can assist the government or the public during natural disasters or emergency situations.”
