The lead actor of one of television’s most popular soaps, Diya Aur Baati Hum, Deepika Singh didn’t know at the outset that the show would give her more than popularity and TRPs that it would give her a life partner. Deepika, popularly known by her screen name Sandhya, is set to the tie the knot with the show’s director Rohit Raj Goyal and was every bit the blushing bride when we caught up with her.
The couple has just started sending out invites to the wedding scheduled to happen later this month or early May. Explaining the last minute rush, she says, “Rohit’s taima expired just two months ago, hence the family was mourning and busy with the last rites. But we have finally got down to sending out the invites. It’s not going to be a very grand affair, just a simple ceremony with a few guests.”
It wasn’t love at first sight for either Deepika or Rohit, she admits. “We’re both from Delhi, but we met each other only in Mumbai, on the sets of our show. We shared a very professional relationship for the longest time and knew each other only in the capacity of an actor and director. In fact we used to have a lot of disagreements on the sets initially. But slowly we started getting along as friends. It’s only much later that we started seeing each other,” she says, promptly clarifying that on the sets they’re still very much colleagues nothing more. “When on the sets, I am Sandhya for him. Once we pack up, I become Deepika and we both take up our roles as fiancés,” she says.
The D Day is almost here, but Deepika has hardly had the time to revel in pre-wedding celebrations like other brides do. In fact, the actress has been working round the clock to make time for the big day. “Since we both will have to take a few days off for the wedding, we’re shooting overtime and finishing off as much of the track as we can in advance. It’s been very hectic.” she says.
While Deepika’s family was accepting of the relationship, there was a bit of hitch right before the wedding, she informs us. “My younger sister had a love marriage and my parents weren’t very pleased with the fact that she was getting hitched before their older daughter. They belong to another generation and it’s only natural for them to have such concerns, but I convinced them that it wasn’t fair for them to hold back the wedding for my sake. They were finally convinced and things fell in place. They are now really looking forward to my wedding,” she adds.
Ask her about her honeymoon plans and Deepika says she hasn’t a clue, so far. “Rohit wants to keep it a surprise. He has already picked a destination, but I am not aware of it. I’ll know only when we reach the airport and I am handed over the tickets,” she says.
