Mumbai: Gals, it’s time to clear out all the heavy coats, jackets and sweaters and embrace the spring summers! If like us your wardrobe needs a warm weather overhaul then why not get your summer style sorted by the midriff-baring silhouettes that has even gained tremendous popularity with Bollywood and international beauties. Yes, the cute, trendy and versatile crop tops are back in vogue with Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Evelyn Sharma, Selena Gomez, Jessica Alba etc. flaunting it so frequently at red carpet events. Undeniably, it is the current summer must-haves. So don’t be afraid to step out in the sun with this effortless fashion.
“It’s the perfect layering silhouette,” says designer Prem Kumar of KHEM. He suggests, “Keep it simple, easy to get in and get out sort of an outfit. In the 90s, it was also referred to as the slip dress and it is back with a bang, as you can see its references all over the international ramps. Short crop tops or jackets with pencil skirts or with long palazzo pants will make you look taller and smarter.” There are so many ways to wear crop tops. While Priyanka Chopra on several occasions reinvented this trend by sporting a geeky to a plain Jane look, Deepika Padukone preferred to dress up on the conservative side.
“Fashion goes a full circle as crop tops have re-emerged from the yester era,” says designer Farah Sanjana. She also explains the do’s and don’ts of this trend: “Do bare at least three-four inches of your mid-riff. Anything more than that is a no-no! The mantra here is ‘less is more’. For the don’ts: this trend suits women who have toned and lean mid-section so I think women with chunky torsos should steer clear from this trend.”
Don’t forget to note that the style spans a broad spectrum of risk. Youngster and fashion stylist Nidhi Sharma, who got her inspiration from Jessica Alba and designer Nikasha Lulla, shares, “I always pair crop tops with tailored wide-legged and ankle length trousers or tulip short skirt. Also I feel this look can be best flaunted with a high-waist maxi skirt which will help us to beat the heat. For accessories, I usually opt for embellished multi-strapped flat footwear and to keep the look elevated, any hair accessory or chic hair-do works for me.”
Another youngster, Shikha Kalra is famous among her friend circle to be obsessed with this trend. She giggles, “Yes, I love wearing them! I think wearing a crop top is a courageous task. But when you start wearing it, you feel so confident. I think the best way to wear crop top is with long tight skirt or with tight leggings.”
As for colour palette, look out for pinks, oranges and blues.
