Print-a-porter with demure, retro, wild and eclectic wear

Don a haute bohemian look as you soak in the psychedelia of prints and patterns
Mumbai: Quirky prints can be great conversation starters. Ditch the mundane and go edgy this summer as you flaunt prints like cameras, lipsticks, safety pins, Om, swastik, sewing machines, space-age themes, Art Deco patterns, table-top fans, insects, autos, anchor, snakes and ladders, circus figures and balloons, butterflies, zebras, cats, tigers or even detergent packets flamingoes, parrots, owls and other birds and see how heads turn. Taking a cue from the latest runway trends, these prints are now de rigueur on tops, tunics, bottoms and even sarees, kurtis and scarves.
The more eccentric the print, the better. Have fun as you slip in a bold print on a black and white tunic that can be mish-mashed with sorbet coloured bottoms or neon tights. International runways are asserting the resurgent popularity of wacky prints. Designers of repute Nida Mahmood, Abraham & Thakore, Masaba Gupta, Satya Paul are going funky and homey. Idiosyncrasy is the buzz word, with blitzkrieg of digital, blocks and screen prints making a rage across prêt designer collections, high street brands and even locally produced creations.
Psychedelic prints: Designer Anjali Sharma of French Curve, known for her couture creations, states, “Print on fabric is a form of art. Fun prints are essential this summer and add to the funk of silhouette and style. Slightly young, wearing fun psychedelic prints is an attitude to flaunt and can be totally addictive!” Creating a wonderful synergy between contemporary and traditional is designer Ravina Belani with her line of contemporary and chic tunics and long kurtas. Ravina states, “Long tunics and kurtas with high slits and funky prints like printed clocks, lipsticks, safety pins, cameras make for a trendy prêt collection. The colour palette is neons in bright hues of oranges, fuchsias, greens and electric blues with white as the base.”
Feeling feline: Sreyasee Halder, Design Head, W, says the affinity is growing, “Out of all the quirky prints right now, animal motifs are the ones that are trending the most. Peacocks, elephants and parrots used in a contemporary form overall lend an unusual look, giving a break from florals or geometrics that have become so common. W has these motifs in Primrose collections.” Agrees, Rahul Gupta, Aviraté who states that animal motifs are a rage even on international runways and this is reflecting on Indian fashion world as well. “Animal and other quirky prints add an element of fun to an outfit. There are motifs of cats, cows, birds and other such catchy prints that add a dash of pizzazz to any ensemble.”
Complete the look: Eena Kapoor, a city based jewellery designer, a Fashion Institute of Technology, New York graduate, says “Chic prints such as cameras, lips, a metropolitan skyline are in vogue internationally and making waves in India too. Team prints with plain-coloured accessories and go easy on the make-up. You can also pair them with a trendy cuff or collar necklace and you are set to turn heads.”
