Netas’ crime graph on rise in Andhra Pradesh

Nearly 21 per cent of Congress candidates this time have serious criminal records
Hyderabad: Despite extensive campaigns by civil society activists regarding de criminalisation of politics, the percentage of poll contestants, who have serious criminal records, has increased in Andhra Pradesh when compared to 2009. All parties are guilty of fielding such candidates. Nearly 21 per cent of Congress candidates this time have serious criminal records, increasing from a mere four per cent in 2009. On the other hand, for Telugu Desam, the figure stands at 22 per cent, rising from 10 per cent in 2009.
According to the Association of Democratic Reforms data, Vemula Veeresham of TRS from Nakrekal and M Chandrashekar of TD from Jadcherla are allegedly involved in murder cases. Alleti Maheshwar Reddy of Congress from Nirmal, Putta Madhukar of TRS from Manthani and Sridhar Reddy Velumula of YSR Congress from Sircilla are allegedly involved in abduction cases. Another 16 candidates have been named in attempt-to-murder cases.
While all the parties talk about women’s safety, six candidates in the fray have cases related to crime against women. Kotha Manohar Reddy of TRS from Maheswaram and Shabbir Hussain of YSRC from Sirpur have cases under Section IPC 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) booked against them
