Game of the elections

Ram Gopal Varma observes how political parties act during elections
It’s highly entertaining if not downright laughable to see how various political parties act on the eve of elections. Most of them put the cart before the horse, focusing their energies when in office on corruption or scams centred on pandering to their egos and their desire for power.
It has become a norm and an accepted fact with government officials to take as much whilst in office, prior to the political mandates set forth by the very organisation they represent. They are intent on acquiring anything and everything, with complete disregard for the law and they themselves misuse their designation, which they so charmingly and eloquently take pride in.
The promises made to the poor are enormous, but when it comes to keeping them, it’s a game of hide-and-seek after the elections have been won. The youth are bombarded with all kinds of dogmatism and slogan shouting, one party after another campaigning to improve the quality of life more than any other party.
We have political parties led by conspiring leaders, who are adamant on fulfilling their agenda in the course of highlighting the other party’s agenda. I actually think the only time a politician really tells the truth is when he calls another politician a liar. The people of India are actually caught in a dilemma of political warfare, each party trying to keep their head above water or gain some political popularity through devious means to achieve a few seats.
Interestingly, most of the “campaigns” are targeted at the poor and uneducated, which is very evident from the tacky ads made by the parties. The slogans on the propaganda hoardings and television ads are indicative of what exactly the netas think of the IQ levels of voters. We wish that whoever wins the elections this time and comes to power will bring much relief to the voters.
But we also know in our hearts that nothing will change. It’s like us wishing everyone “Happy New Year” knowing well that wishing is not going to give anyone any happiness. The socio-economic imbalance will take its own time to sort out and by almost unseen hands in due course of time, but there will be nothing to do with the people who harass us to come to the polling booths to vote for them.
