IPL spot fixing case: Mudgal panel to meet on May 25

SC had suggested to include a former player in the panel

Mumbai: Members of the Mukul Mudgal Commission will meet in Delhi on Sunday to discuss their scope of functioning, it was confirmed by the chairman. Justice Mudgal told this paper, “Our scope of work is limited and as ordered by the Supreme Court, work has to begin soon.

“We have not decided on which former player to include (as suggested by the apex court). We are meeting for the first time on May 25 and only then will we discuss and decide about the inclusion of a new member in the panel,” he said.

Speculation abounds on whom that “former cricketer of repute and integrity” will be.

“We would prefer a former captain for this job,” one of the probe members said.

The names of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Dilip Vengsarkar and Bishan Singh Bedi are likely to be discussed, it was learnt. However, according to one of the members, Sachin is too big a name to be included in the panel. If the committee decides to chose from non-captains, Mohinder Amarnath’s name may be discussed. Amarnath did not lead India, though he was a captain to the zonal teams.

B.B. Mishra, the newest member of the panel, will investigate the underworld’s links with match-fixers. Being a deputy director in the Narcotics Control Bureau in Delhi, his links with the Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai police are likely to be very useful in the enquirers, it is believed.

The 59-year old Mishra was a club cricketer in his college days. He is a great fan of Sunil Gavaskar. “Sachin Tendulkar being a recent cricketer has more fans but I am Sunil Gavaskar’s admirer. He was technically a better and more sound batsman,” he added.
