Top technocrats to aid Prime Minister Narendra Modi

PM to set up team with specialists from sectors

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to rope in some top technocrats to advise him. After abolishing coalition-era GoMs and EGoMs, Mr Modi is set to dismantle the age-old advisory councils attached to the PMO.

There are four PMO advisory councils, economic, skill development and industry/infrastructure. Mr Modi, after dismantling them, may set up a team of 10 high-level technocrats, each from a specific sector, to advise him. He will, thus, not have to depend completely on ministries for expert advice.

Government sources said the “thinking was to replace the old system of different multi-member groups chaired by individuals advising the PM as there was a lot of duplication and a total absence of accountability”.

Mr Modi, these sources said, wanted to make the entire decision-making process simple, quick and accountable. One of them said: “The PM is planning to rope in experts from different sectors, economic, scientific, infrastructure and others to help him take decisions. The PM will head the panel himself and decisions will be taken in consultation with them individually.”

The possible members are yet to be finalised, but the names doing the rounds include former minister Arun Shourie, former Delhi Metro boss E. Sreedharan and HDFC Bank chairman Deepak Parekh.
