Space crunch at cemeteries at Hyderabad
Hyderabad: People belonging to different religious faiths have complained about the shortage of space in burial grounds meant for human beings.
Some said there were multiple burials at the same place and sometimes, due to road widening and other activities, graves have been destroyed in some cemeteries.
There are around 33 cemeteries in GHMC limits, both private as well as run by the city corporation.
“I had no idea that my cousin's grave was destroyed until a year of his death. It was shocking. How can one touch a grave without permission? I have complained several times in vain,” said a resident of Narayanguda.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had earmarked Rs 3.62 crore in 2012-2013 for the maintenance of the 33 cemeteries in the GHMC area.
But now they have set up an electrical crematorium on a trial basis at Serilingampally.
“We are having major space problems. With Metro corridors and road widening projects on, it is difficult to provide space,” said N. Ravi Kiran, the GHMC additional commissioner for health and sanitation.
