All play for Kalki in Chennai

Kalki will be back in Chennai after years to perform a play

Chennai: After receiving rave reviews and setting social media forums abuzz with her powerful delivery of a monologue titled An Intense Piece about the Truths of Womanhood at a national conclave, Kalki Koechlin is to doing what she enjoys the most. The critically acclaimed actress is all set to go on a whirlwind tour across the country for a play that’s tentatively titled Trivial Disasters.

An excited Kalki says, “Theatre needs a lot of preparation. You can’t do retakes and need to be perfect with your timing on stage. We practised for four to five hours on a daily basis for three weeks to get our acts right. Also, as an actor you get so much to learn through theatre performances and for me in particular, it’s even more special because this is where I started.”

The play will kick-off on July 25, and will be staged across Indian cities until September. The show will be staged in Chennai on July 27. An excited Kalki says, “I’m performing in Chennai after a long time and I’m really looking forward to it. I visit Chennai whenever I find time as my brother lives here.”

The play directed by Atul Kumar also stars Kalki’s co-star and good friend, award-winning actress Richa Chadha. This is also one of Kalki’s many collaborations with actress Richa Chadha.

On her relationship with Richa, she says, “We share the same sensibility, believe in the same kind of cinema and we add to each other’s performance when we're on screen or on stage. I’ve known her for a long time now and she’s a wonderful actress. It’s always great fun working with her.”

The two actresses will also be seen in lead roles in one of the most anticipated Hindi films of the year, the coming-of-age movie Jiah Aur Jiah.
She adds that the widely reported news on the two actors learning Kalaripayattu for the film is not true.

“We’re learning Kalaripayattu along with some members of the play, but it’s got nothing to do with the play. One of our troupe members has a small centre that teaches this ancient martial art form so we decided to learn. It’s gives one a great energy boost.”
