Madras High Court building gets eco-friendly makeover

Madras high court is getting a major facelift as its aged buildings

Chennai: The corridors of the judiciary are being spruced up. The natural beauty of the age-old stone, granite and marble of the building that sports the Indo-Saracenic style and was built in 1862, will be restored. A private concern, Konki Surface Restorers, has been involved in stone restoration and paint removal from the staircase and corridors of the court, using an eco friendly process.
Nithin Krishnamurthy, spokesperson for the firm, said that the conventional methods of cleaning the surface involved messy, laborious scraping, sanding, chipping, needle scaling, wire brushing, sand blasting or using a cocktail of harsh chemicals that would affect the surface.

The base substrate had to be prevented from harm while cleaning the surface, the soda blasting process being one that could do it without any of the side effects. “The restoration process is a time tested and eco-friendly process of removing varied surface coatings without causing damage to the substrate or the environment,” he added. Other projects that the firm has worked on include the Sri Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple in Melukote, Mandya district, Karnataka and the historic structure of the Lalbagh botanical garden in Bengaluru.
