Hyderabad teens overtake other metros on Facebook
Hyderabad: Hyderabad teenagers seem to be ahead of those from other metros when it comes to social media usage and online shopping, claims a new survey. While Facebook guidelines allow only people above of the age of 18 to register for an account, almost 83 per cent of kids aged 12 to 18 in Hyderabad have accounts.
The figures are a bit lower in other metros but not by much. Interestingly, teenagers in Hyderabad spend less time on the Internet. Results of the TCS GenY Survey shows nearly 83 per cent high-school students in the age group of 12 to 18 from Hyderabad have Facebook accounts while 44 per cent have Twitter accounts.
A whopping 83 per cent of Hyderabad teenagers shop online while it is just 68 per cent in other metros cumulatively. Mini metros trail marginally behind at 67 per cent of respondents indulging in online shopping.
Most of the online shopping is for movie tickets, clothes and accessories.
The survey cited the complexity of using Twitter behind its poor usage among teenagers. In what is an indicator of changing times and purchasing power and proliferation of smartphones, usage of cyber cafes for social media and other purposes has come down to zero.
Ajoy Mukherjee, executive vice-president, TCS, said, “Tomorrow’s professionals will be socially active, highly adaptable to new technologies and extremely aware of the world around them. Our annual survey of high school students shows that urban teenagers are adopting new social platforms quickly, using them in multiple ways and leading the way in driving change.”
While in an ideal situation, they shouldn’t be looking at social media before they are 18, Hyderabad teenagers tend to post less online when compared to those from other metros and mini metros. twitter.com/DeccanChronicle
