Youngsters sell haleem to earn during Ramzan

Pista House alone provides part-time jobs to 500 people every year during the festive season

Hyderabad: Haleem, a popular dish served during Ramzan, dishes out job opportunities to many in the city. All major haleem outlets like Pista House, Shah Ghouse and other small units across the city offer employment to students.

Pista House alone provides part-time jobs to 500 people every year during the festive season. Shah Ghouse, rated second, also employs about 100 people. While other small outlets employ 5-10 people.

“We provide seasonal employment to students who wish to earn while they learn and a few others who are needy. Students take up the job after college hours and make extra money to support their families,” said Mohd. Abdul Majeed, owner of Pista House.

For the 30 days period there is no contract and people join and quit when they wish to. The students are not directly employed; they work on a commission basis. They buy haleem from the kitchen and sell it to customers, earning Rs 5 per plate.

“This is going to be my third year. What I earn ensures that I am independent. I also call my unemployed friends from the villages as one can easily earn around Rs 6000-7000 in this month. We also earn through tips and that’s a bonus,” said Mohd. Shahbaz, a final year student.
