Amma salt flies off the shelves
Chennai: Amma salt has received a good response from consumers, with 75 packets being sold within three days of its release in one of its outlets at Ashok Nagar, such brisk sale even causing a shortage of supply.
“Eighty tonnes of salt have been distributed across Tamil Nadu, with 19 tonnes in Amudham supermarkets and 4 tonnes in wholesale markets in Chennai. There are plans to expand the sale further into other states and making it available in more stores,” said C. Kamaraj, managing director of Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation.
There are three varieties of salt priced according to their nutritional value, differing in price by about Rs 6 from those sold by private companies. Free flow iodised salt, priced at Rs 10, is the fastest selling among the three for it is said to help in curing iodine deficiency which can lead to mental retardation and development delays in children while the nutritional value of low sodium and double fortified salt, priced at '21 and '14 respectively, caters to the needs of patients of blood pressure and anaemia.
“Low sodium salt helps those who have cardiac problems, diabetes, and those at the risk of hypertension in the management of blood pressure although it is advisable for patients with renal failure to consume it on a doctor’s prescription,” says Meenakshi Bajaj, chief dietitian, Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital (RGGH).
