No private medical entry tests in Telangana

KCR against entrance tests by private med colleges

Hyderabad: Despite intense lobbying by private medical colleges with the Telangana government there is practically no chance of a separate medical entrance test for private colleges this year. However, some officials say that it will be a long battle as the Supreme Court has directed the government to allow the test. The Telangana government is firmly opposed to the idea of a separate test.

The Supreme Court had directed the government to allow a separate entrance test exclusively for private medical colleges after forming a consortium, which would have to be recognised by the government. The Telangana government is opposed to the idea though the consortium has been formed and recognised.

It is learnt that the Telangana Chief Minister opposed the separate private medical entrance test. Deputy Chief Minister Dr T. Rajaiah has categorically said the government will not allow a private medical entrance test.
However, senior officials say that it will be difficult to implement this decision after the SC ruling and they will have to go for a review petition.

The recognition of the private medical colleges consortium was itself delayed by the government. “The deadline was June 30. We delayed recognition for the consortium till the last day so that it becomes difficult to conduct the test this year. The recognition was granted with several conditions attached. This year it is impossible for them to conduct their entrance test,” a senior official said. However, officials say it will be tough to hold ground on the issue.

“From now on it is a little difficult because the legal battles will take a long time. I don’t know why the government is not allowing separate tests after the SC ruling, particularly when there is an engineering entrance test by a private consortium,” another official said.

Counselling for medical seats will be held for both government and private medical colleges together this year, according to Eamcet convener N.V. Ramana Rao, though dates have not been decided yet.
