Central government plans e-library

The project aims at allowing students access content at low cost

New Delhi: The Union human resource development ministry is preparing a Cabinet note to create a national e-library, aimed at establishing an e-books and e-magazine, besides designing an audio-visual interactive platform for students and academic fraternity across the country.

A poll promise of the BJP, the proposal also came in for a mention in the Presidential address made to the joint sessions of Parliament recently. Senior officials in the ministry are currently deliberating on the blueprint for launching the programme.

The National e-library project has been proposed keeping in view the repeated assertions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has expressed his desire that students and teachers should utilise technology in their quest for higher learning.

The project is aimed at empowering school teachers and students as it would enable them to access course content at minimal cost. Through the establishment of a national e-library the ministry aims to digitise books in libraries and connect them with each other.

However, sources stated that the project could face a hurdle as a few authors or publishers could object to digitisation and putting up of their books on the Internet, denying them the revenue generated through book sales.
