England’s back-to-back defeats sealed their fate in World Cup

Mumbai: Wayne Rooney's post on his facebook account said it all; about his disappointment and about how England’s had fared in the FIFA World Cup 2014.

The England and Manchester United striker wrote: Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out. Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!

Amid all the promise and confidence, England approached their World Cup campaign. However, Italy defeated them 2-1 in their first game. England were hopeful that they would recover from Italy defeat by beating Uruguay. But that did not materialise.

While there was a lot of criticism directed towards Rooney following England’s game against the Azzurri, Rooney made a solid comeback as he scored a goal against Uruguay. However, his goal was not enough as Suarez powered his side to a win.

England’s chances to make it to the round of 16 dependent heavily on Italy’s win over Costa Rica. But the Costa Ricans pulled off a superb win over Prandeli’s wards and so went the England’s chances to reach to the next round.
