FIFA World Cup 2014: Costa Rica livid as FIFA conduct dope test on seven of their players
Mumbai: The governing body of football, FIFA has reportedly call seven Costa Rica players to undergo a dope test. The news comes in just when the Costa Rica fans are celebrating their team's big win over Italy.
According to FIFA guidelines, two players of each team had to undergo a dope test following a game. However, by calling seven players to take the test, FIFA had taken an unprecedented step. The list of players includes Bryan Ruiz who scored the winning goal against the Azzurri.
Appalled by FIFA’s move, footballing legend Diego Maradone stated, “Why test seven players from Costa Rica and not seven from Italy? "It's against the rules. Two players from each team are supposed to undergo doping controls. I know what I'm talking about because it happened to me. But seven players? I've never seen something like that.
"Taking seven Costa Ricans to doping shows a lack of respect to the players and to the rules. Costa Rica had an incredible qualification. They had three world champions in the group and they beat them with good football."
After beating two top sides: Uruguay and Italy in a row, Costa Rica will be facing England in their final group match. While the news of dope test is disturbing for the side, Costa Rica would be looking to maintain their winning run.
