Forced to switch hands, lefties prone to disorders

Schizophrenia affects left-handers twice as more than it does right-handers
Hyderabad: Most left-handers, who are forced to switch into using their right hands, are likely to suffer from developmental disorders and schizophrenia. Statistics reveal that schizophrenia affects left-handers twice as more (22 per cent) than it does right-handers.
“Left-handers should not be forced to use their right hand as the brain becomes clumsier during interactions between the left and the right,” said Dr Manas K. Mandal, scientist and director, DRDO, New Delhi, at the memorial function of Prof. Y. Nayudamma held at CSIR-IICT, organised by the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences.
He said that 95 per cent of the things and activities designed in India suit right-handers. There are left-handed people in any profession and they tend to adjust against nature and work. This increases the chances of accidents. Compared to men, women are less lateralised and are ambi-dexterous.
There are around 4.5 per cent reported left-handers in India while the actual figures should be close to 10 per cent. Of these, 10 per are forced to switch hands.
During the talk, Dr Mandal said side bias has been a continuous phenomenon that has been there since centuries for survival.
