Cop’s widow alleges harassment by ex-cop
Kollam: The wife of a policeman who died in the gas tanker accident at Karunagappally in 2009 has alleged harassment by a retired police official over the money borrowed by her from him. Geethamol, 36, wife of Pradeep Kumar, and a mother of two, has also not received the insurance amount to be provided by the government for the dependants of policemen who die while on duty.
She has sought a Crime Branch inquiry into the matter as the local police has reportedly taken no action on her petition. Pradeep Kumar was a police officer at the Chavara police station and he died while conducting rescue operations at the accident site.
According to Geethamol, Pradeep Kumar had borrowed Rs 4.5 lakh from his colleague Sasidharan Pillai of Chavara. After his death, Geethamol started a tiles shop by borrowing Rs 13.5 lakh from Sasidharan Pillai by pledging her seven cents’ house plot. She used to pay Rs 51,000 per month as interest but when she failed to pay the interest on time, Sasidharan Pillai allegedly started harassing her.
She also alleged that no action had been taken by the police authorities though she had submitted a petition to the City Police Commissioner. However, the Chavara police had registered a suo motu case against the accused after the issue was taken up by the media, but thereafter no action was taken, she alleged.
