Dreams in blue and tangerine

It is a season of shared glory between blue and orange

Wonder what’s the new black this season? The answer turned out to be a pretty tie between orange and blue. While the New York S/S ’14 Fashion Week gave clear signals of orange domination, labels like Chloe, Carolina Herrera, Prabal Gurung, Valentino inclined towards hues of blue. Let’s say, it is a season of shared glory.

Closer home too, many designers seem to be lured by the dual charm of azure and tangerine, and their choices are reflected in their creations for the season.

For instance, blue has caught the fancy of designer Deepika Govind. “I am inspired by the ancient blue pottery, and my collection ‘Blue Pot’ traces its source to the blue of Jaipur, Greece and pure indigo of China,” informs the Bengaluru-based designer.

Blue is the highlight of designer Anita Dongre’s colour story this season. “The collection is inspired by the blue jay bird. The idea was to keep it effortlessly cool and vibrant. While a domination of blue is clearly visible, the inclusion of white adds a serene factor, and these two tones are injected with a little print allure,” says Anita.

She explores the beauty of azure and pristine whites in two-tone maxis, shirt dresses, short skirts as well as separates. “A deconstructed blue top and cigarette pants in white can be a scene-stealer,” she adds.

For many, orange is haute property this season. Counting the high points of the hue, designer Shruti Bhandari says, “Orange is energising and a vibrant summery colour. From high street to the couture club, this colour is a hot favourite everywhere. In fact, if you turn to your wardrobe on a dull day, you simply cannot resist the orange temptation. Considering how grey monsoons tend to be, treating it with some colour delights is an instant mood-lifter. And look at the sheer variety it provides — poppy orange, carrot orange, bright saffron, rust, red-tinged bricks.”

Designer Megha Garg too gives a thumbs up to orange and says, “This is a complete colour, and with this you can go accessories-free and still look good. I won’t think twice about opting for a sheath dress in orange. Add sequins for maximum chic.”
