Information and Broadcast to survey community radio success

Centre has decided to rope an independent consulting agency to conduct survey

New Delhi: With a provision of Rs 100 crore being made by the government for promotion of community radio stations in the country, the information and broadcasting ministry has decided to conduct a survey to assess the success and reach of existing stations and on the need for more. Sources stated that the survey is likely to be completed in four months.

The Centre has decided to rope an independent consulting agency to conduct the survey. At present there are about 170 community radio stations working in the country. About 250 stations are in various stages of the licensing process.

The Centre is understood to be focusing on the growth of community radios as these stations are felt to be closer to common man and take up issues neglected by the mainstream media.
