Supreme Court bars private MBBS entrance

The apex court in a verdict on Tuesday said that the colleges under the private managements should admit students only from the list prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations.

Meanwhile, the court strongly criticised the absence of government lawyer despite the serious nature of the case. The private managements had asked permission for a separate examination after the deadline, saying that they waited for the CBSE Class XII results to be announced before the conduct of the entrance examinations.

Issues had stemmed from the failure of these colleges to conduct the entrance examinations for management quota seats before May 31 and publish the rank list before June 30, the deadline fixed by the Medical Council of India. The admission supervisory committee, headed by J M James, had taken a stand against extending the deadline.

The managements then approached the court for an extension of this deadline.

Meanwhile, the third phase of allotment to the professional degree courses, except MBBS/BDS courses, will be published on Wednesday. MBBS and BDS were excluded from the allotment as the case relating to medical admission was before the court.

The third round will be the last round of allotment to Government, Government-controlled Self-Financing colleges and private self-financing engineering and architecture colleges.

All higher order options of candidates, who get allotment or admission to private self-financing engineering or architecture colleges after the third phase of allotment, will be deleted.

Meanwhile, a petition has been submitted to admission supervisory committee, alleging foul play in decision to complete the allotment process to SF engineering and architecture colleges by July 23.

As per the prospectus, admissions to self-financing engineering colleges would end with the third round of allotment to be held on the day. The complaint submitted by CBSE –ICSE Parents Forum Coordinator, Dr N K Sanil Kumar, to the James committee said that during the previous years nearly six allotments were held for engineering colleges.
