‘I share fitness tips with Suriya’
Vidyut Jamwal opens up about having fun on the sets with Suriya
Chennai: Vidyut Jamwal, who was in the city for Anjaan’s audio premiere, is quite contrary in real life to the villainous characters he plays. Having established himself as an action hero in Bollywood, the handsome, well-built actor is the most sought after villain to all leading heroes in the south.
Vidyut says that he didn’t plan it that way. “I’m only accepting offers that intrigue me. I don’t mind even if the character appears only for a minute as long as it makes an impact. And I’m happy about the kind of characters I’m getting in Tamil. My role in Anjaan is very different from what I played in Billa 2 and Thuppakki. My character is Chandrubhai and Suriya’s is Rajubhai. Though I can’t reveal more now, all I can say is Suriya and I are partners in crime in the movie,” he says.
Director Lingusamy seems to have met Vidyut at last year’s SIIMA Awards and told him he would like to cast him in a film of his. While Vidyut thought it was merely the director making a gesture of appreciation, to his surprise, he did get a call from Lingusamy within two weeks, asking him to come down to Chennai for an audition. Vidyut said he was amazed at Lingusamy’s earlier film, Paiyya, and didn’t want to lose the opportunity to work with him.
Vidyut is full of praise for co-actor Suriya too. “It was a lot of fun shooting with Suriya. He doesn’t have any airs about his star status and was very friendly on the sets. There is a song in Anjaan in which both of us dance together. Shooting ended, but we went on performing our own steps despite the director having called ‘Cut’ long before,” he recalls.
Considering Suriya is a keen fitness enthusiast too, did the duo share tips? “Of all the actors I have worked with, Suriya has an amazing body and I was surprised that he knew so much about fitness. The only difference is I follow a vegan diet,” says the actor who turned vegan 12 years ago and has never felt the need to switch back. “Only in India is it a myth that vegans can’t build muscles. Most international sportspersons have turned vegetarian. My request to all vegetarians is please stay vegetarian,” he says.
Vidyut is now shooting for Yaara, in which actress Shruti Haasan plays his love interest. His next, Commando 2, will go on the floors next year. “Yaara is a love action drama. Shruti is a pretty girl and talented actor. We are making Commando 2 bigger than Commando at every level. We realised that there was a market for action films at the international level only after Commando,” he says.
There have been reports that Vidyut refused offers in movies with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan recently. “When those offers came, I had already started shooting for Yaara. Or, why would I say no to act with Salman and Shah Rukh. I mean, who would?” he concludes.
