Five kg LPG cylinders will become easily available
Chennai: Five-kilogram LPG cylinders, introduced to cater to the needs of migrant white-collar workers, are going to be made available across the state through registered LPG gas dealers by next month, say Indian Oil Corporation officials.
The facility is presently available at only two outlets in the city, the Adyar petrol bunk and Kamadhenu supermarket in Teynampet. Fourteen outlets had been identified in the city last year but getting official permissions and identification of storage space was taking time, the officials say.
For now, 239 new connections (for 5-kg LPG cylinders) have been issued in the city and 600 refills have been dispensed. An official adds, “We expect farther reach of the system by allowing dealers to supply the cylinders, making it possible for people who have earlier connections to take an additional one too.”
The initiative, which was started late last year, was aimed at students, IT professionals and BPO employees, as well as people with odd work hours, offering them the flexibility to pick up these 5-kg cylinders and obtain refills at the time of their choice because petrol stations are open for longer hours.
The portability of LPG connections, an initiative which allowed consumers to switch gas agencies, was also allowed earlier this year though officials say that there have not been many takers. The newly introduced 5-kg cylinders are available at a cost of Rs 1,913, while their refill costs Rs 482.
