Hyderabad: Engineering colleges want the government to allow them to fill management quota seats before the Eamcet counselling begins. Colleges also want vacant seats to be opened to students from other states. Currently, the management quota seats can only be filled after the notification for Eamcet counselling is issued.
Management quota seats or Category B seats are to be filled after counselling to Category A seats in Eamcet is completed. Colleges want admissions to categories A and B to be delinked.
“Immediately after the announcement of Intermediate and Eamcet results, colleges must be allowed to notify and fill Category B seats without waiting for notification and filling of Category A seats,” engineering colleges say.
Data shows that since 2009-10 not even half the management quota seats have been filled. In 2012-13, only about half the management quota seats were filled, while in 2007-08, about 82 per cent were filled.
College managements argue that the demand for management quota has reduced due to the delay in their notification.
Dr Gautam Rao, chairman, Telangana Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements Association, said, “We should be allowed to fill the 30 per cent management quota seats before the counselling notification. Many seats are going empty because of the current procedure.”
Colleges also want the government to throw open the Category A seats for students from other states.
Officials say that such a move would allow colleges to fix a higher price tag for seats. “Students with lower ranks would vie for seats in better colleges and they would have to shell out more. It will result in complete lack of transparency. Already, seats are sold for huge sums,” a senior education official said.
