The good samaritans: Helping people in road accidents
Hyderabad: On February 15, this year, Aaron Christopher was on his way to distribute invites for his niece’s wedding when he was “hit by something”. In the next few seconds, the 62-year-old found himself in a pool of his own blood and in excruciating pain.
While hundreds gathered around him almost instantly, only Vamsi Ganji and his wife Vyshali took action. They strapped a bloody and confused Aaron to the backseat of their new car and rushed him to the hospital. And, they left the hospital only when Aaron’s colleagues had arrived.
Recently, the couple was given the “Good Samaritan Award” by Roadkraft NGO (working towards road safety). Aaron joined the NGO after the accident that left him with broken ribs and vertebrae, forced him to skip the wedding and quit his job.
This, however, was not a first for Vamsi. The businessman always makes it a point to stop and check on the victim in an emergency. He says, “Because the injured can be your brother, father or relative. It’s crucial to help the victims of road accidents, people should not just walk away. In the past, I have helped the victims on Punjagutta road, then on the Warangal and Vizag highways and have followed up on their recovery.”
The fear of getting involved in police cases hasn’t deterred the couple either. Working professional Vyshali, says “Had we been late by half-an-hour, Aaron would have been paralysed on one side. I believe that if you help someone, that help comes back to you and your family.”
