Telangana hawkers join crime fight

Private guards, vendors told to report suspicious persons
Hyderabad: Hawkers and private guards will now be part of crime control. The police has requested them to provide information about suspicious individuals. The Central Zone police held an awareness programme on Friday emphasising the safe city concept, and the role of hawkers and private security guards in making the city safer.
Officials said that hawkers and security guards can play a vital role in ensuring security. Police asked them to call 100 or alert local cops if they come across anyone suspicious. Hawkers were cautioned not to stop anyone or start questioning as that could alert them.
The police asked everyone to be a plainclothes cop to fight crime. “Most hawkers and guards may have difficulty in making calls due to the cost factor. If you give us a missed call we will reach the spot immediately,” said a senior cop.
The police will also be deploying a special software for alerting hawkers and security guards. Police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy has already handed over the project to an agency. Details of local hawkers, vendors, and guards will be collected and kept at police stations.
“A software is being designed to keep in touch with them. In case of crime in any area, SMSes will be immediately sent to them,” said Mr V.B. Kamalasan Reddy, DCP, Central Zone.
Pointing to the terror attacks at Dilsukhnagar, Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat, Mr Reddy asked them to look out for persons who leave behind bags or any other material. Pictures of wanted criminals and terrorists will be distributed to all hawkers and security guards. “If you see suspects inform the police immediately. If you witness crime react as a group,” he said. “If the city is safe investments will come in and many jobs will be created. This will benefit hawkers too,” said Saifabad inspector P. Ashok.
