Beware of fake fire engineering institutes
Students ensure that the courses prescribe to the safety standards of the National Safety Council
Thiruvananthapuram: Students seeking admission into fire engineering colleges should ensure that the courses of their choice prescribe to the safety standards of the National Safety Council or Board of Technical Education. Or else they may end up as one among thousands of students who get admitted to over 10 odd organisations that lack affiliation after spending nearly Rs 25,000 annually.
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) directly runs a BTech course in the state. The fee structure for the CUSAT course was Rs 43,300 for merit seats, Rs 52,300 for payment seats and Rs 2,43,300 for an NRI course.
Government Polytechnic, Kalamasserry, offered a certificate course in fire engineering under the Board of Technical Education. There are also some professional bodies, like the Institute of Engineering,
Thiruvananthapuram, which offer these certificate courses. Fire engineering is a course that teaches designing and developing fire systems to reduce the consequences of fire.
There are various career options available for students who study fire engineering. Engineers entering the field can go to various sectors in the government or private firms based on their inclinations.
Some of the fields in which they can get employed include chemical or inflammable products manufacturing firms, like petroleum refineries, textiles and fertilisers. There is also scope for fire engineering graduates in the field of manufacturing, chemicals and handling bottling plants.
The courses available for those interested in fire engineering include B.E. Fire Engineering, B.Tech Fire and Safety Engineering, Post Graduate Diploma in Fire and Safety Engineering, Diploma in Fire and Industrial Safety Engineering, Diploma in Fire and Safety Engineering Management (DFSEM), Diploma in Fire and Safety Engineering (DFSE), Diploma in Fire Engineering, Diploma in Industrial Safety Engineering (DISE) and Certificate Course in Fire and Safety Engineering (CFSE).
