9,000 cusecs odf water will be released from the dam from Sunday
Salem/Chennai: The state government has advanced water release from Mettur Stanley reservoir for samba crop following steady inflow that took the dam’s water level to 103 feet on Saturday.
Ordering the release of 9,000 cusecs from the dam from Sunday, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the dam received 90,000 cusecs on Saturday and the present rate of inflow is expected to continue.
About 12.40tmcft was received from August 7 to 9 alone owing to heavy discharge from Kabini and KRS dams in Karnataka and the dam reached 103.10 ft on Saturday morning, she pointed out. The government had earlier announced 15 August as the date of opening of Mettur dam.
Several state ministers have camped at Salem for the formal opening of the dam on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Salem district administration, which has sounded flood alert, has warned people living on Cauvery river bank to move a safe distance away and also keep their cattle off the river bank. Also, the district administration has suspended vehicle movement on the road adjoining the 16sluices from Sunday till further notification. Mettur dam missed the scheduled June 12 water release this year owing to an initially failed southwest monsoon.
