Motorists pay for signal glitches

Inspite of traffic signals been replaced traffic management has not improved
Hyderabad: Several traffic signals in the city do not display the amber light and the signal changes directly to green from red, and vice versa. This has been causing major problems from motorists. It seems like the authorities have either not noticed the glitch, or are not willing to rectify the flaw. After about 351 traffic signals were replaced by the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System, people thought traffic management would improve, but that has not been the case.
“One might think that the amber light not being displayed is not a big deal. But it is very important. Once you cross the signal, and the light changes directly from green to red, you are caught technically violating the traffic rules,” says Ganesh Kumar, a resident of Adarshnagar. At some places like Ranigunj, Malakpet, Chaderghat, Abids, Basheerbagh etc., commuters are being penalised for unintentionally jumping the signals.
“I was caught twice by the traffic police at Ranigunj and had to pay for jumping the signal. The signal had turned red from green directly and I had no time to react,” said Sumeet Malhotra, a resident of Sainikpuri.“It is not that there is no provision for the amber light, but there must be some technical problem. We make sure that the problem is fixed,” said Sudheer Babu, DCP, Traffic.
