Mid-course students in a fix due to Telangana FAST scheme
There is no clarity for second year students fee reimbursement
Hyderabad: Thousands of mid-course beneficiaries of the fee reimbursement scheme will have to wait longer as the Telangana State government will decide their future only after the modalities of the Financial Assistance for Students of Telangana (FAST) scheme are decided.
The Telangana government introduced the FAST scheme to fund Telangana students’ education, scrapping the earlier government’s fee reimbursement scheme. However, mid-course students those entering second, third and fourth years are left in limbo with no clarity on whether they will continue to get government funding.
Many of these students do not satisfy the 1956 nativity and other eligibility criteria of the FAST scheme. College managements are also confused since classes of second, third and fourth year have already begun. “We are in a financial mess with debts piling up. Moreover, we do not know if the fees of these students will be paid by the government and whether we should allow the student to attend classes,” the owner of an engineering college in the city said.
“We have to fix the guidelines and eligibility criteria for FAST only then can we decide about existing the beneficiaries,” said an official of the education department.
