PM Narendra Modi effect: BIS label must on 19,000 goods

Imported goods too will come under the BIS label
New Delhi: The “zero defect” call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to industry will not be just an exhortation, but soon codified in a strong law.
In a few months, over 19,000 products will require a mandatory Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) label, which currently covers a mere 107 products. Also, imported goods too will come under the BIS label. Lapses will attract a jail term of one year and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
The government is seeking to move an exhaustive amendment to the BIS Act of 1986 in the next session of the Parliament.
The National Standards Body on the anvil will be the “quality keeper” of the nation and will monitor goods and services. The Department of Consumer Affairs is ready with a draft amendment to the BIS Act of 1986, with inputs from the Prime Minister’s Office.
