No opposition to Tangirala Soumya for bypoll
Congress and the YSRC have decided not to field any candidate for Nandigama Assembly seat
Vijayawada:Tangirala Soumya, daughter of late Tangirala Prabhakar Rao, may be elected unopposed to the Nandigama Assembly seat, provided the Telugu Desam decides to field her and there are no Independent candidates in the fray for the byelections due on September 13.
Ms Soumya’s election would be a formality since the two other major parties, the YSR Congress and the Congress, are said to be willing not to field their candidates, as a mark of respect to Prabhakar Rao, who expired days after being declared elected.
The district leadership of both the YSRC and Congress are said to be willing to honour the tradition of supporting the family members of a deceased legislator. Already, the local leadership of these two parties have discussed the issue and they are not favour of contesting the bypoll.
Recently, the level committees of both the parties reviewed the situation and decided that if the TD fields Ms Soumya, they won’t contest. The TD has a strong base in the constituency and the late Prabhakar Rao also had a good track record as a legislator, having been elected twice.
Interestingly, Mr Rao was second legislator who died while representing the Nandigama segment. AP irrigation minister Devineni Umamaheshwara Rao also entered politics after the demise of his brother, Devineni Venkata Ramana, who was the sitting legislator.
Meanwhile, district Congress president N. Narasimha Rao said that the APCC would take the final decision, but the local leadership was not willing to contest. YSRC leader mandal leader G.V. Ramana said that his party would follow suit.
