Changanassery diocese hires teachers despite confusion

Hundreds of candidates had applied for various posts
KOTTAYAM: The Changanassery Archdiocese’s corporate management has received many applications from prospective candidates for the post of higher secondary school teachers, despite the lack of clarity on their salary and the absence of a Government intimation regarding the procedures for recruiting teachers to these schools.
Sources from the corporate management said the High Court verdict on plus-two courses might not be binding on them. Hundreds of candidates had applied for various posts and their certificates were being verified.
“We haven’t received any other intimation from the Government regarding the process of recruitment. However, we have invited applications and many have applied for the post of higher secondary teachers in the two schools where plus-two was allotted to us. Details of interview and other proceedings will be disclosed only after we get some intimation from the Government. We hope the High
Court reference will not affect us”, said Fr Mathew Nadamukath, corporate manager of the Archdiocese.
Previously, teachers used to be appointed after they were interviewed by a three-member board which included a Government nominee of the rank of Deputy Collector. The school manager and principal would be the other members. Candidates selected would be appointed as Government guest lecturers, on a salary of '600 per day. The Archdiocese was allotted plus-two in two schools, the A.J.John Memorial High School, Kainady and St Sebastian High School, Ayarkkunnam.
The Archdiocese’s decision to go ahead with the recruitment procedures is curious, as the NSS management has rejected the plus-two allotted to them for this academic year citing various reasons including non-availability of students for the newly allotted schools and lack of clarity regarding the salary of the teachers to be appointed.
Though those belonging to other communities will also be considered for the recruitment to the teacher vacancies under the corporate management, preference will be to those community members who come under the arch diocese, says sources.
