CBSE schools asks students who are members of NSS or any similar social service scheme, be given grace marks

KOZHIKODE: The government should stop discriminating against CBSE students and keeping them away from social service activities like Students Police Cadet (SPC) and the National Service Scheme (NSS),” says Ms Indira Rajan, general secretary of the Kerala CBSE School Managements' Association (KCSMA), which has submitted a proposal to Human Resource Minister, Smrithi Irani, asking that students who are members of SPC , NSS or any similar social service scheme, be given grace marks.
“CBSE schools students are denied the grace marks for class X and higher secondary examinations while state board students receive them. This is affecting the prospects of CBSE students in Kerala,”says KCSMA district member, P Radhakrishnan, explaining that in the absence of the grace marks , CBSE students are losing out when weightage is computed for class X and Plus Two public examinations.
“We request the government to treat all CBSE schools on par with state board schools when extending at least some of the privileges,” he pleads.
Ms Indira says few CBSE schools offer programmes like SPC and NSS because they cannot promise the students any additional marks for participating in them. “Our institution is one of the very few CBSE schools in the country to have a unit of the Students' Police Cadet. Although it is the best run SPC unit, it did not receive a single penny from the government when it announced Rs 6 crore for implementing the project,” she rues.
Despite the lack of support from the education department, some CBSE schools do run a Students Police Cadet unit for the benefit of their students.
