Different views of the people on The Ice Bucket Challenge
Hyderabad: The Ice Bucket Challenge, without a doubt, is one of the biggest phenomena on social media. But the bottomline is how many even know what ALS is? Not to mention the insensitive memes doing the rounds which are dishonouring the memory of the victims of the Titanic disaster.
Moreover, if people do want to make a difference, are they donating or are they just interested in taking the challenge because everybody is doing it? A point recently made by actress Sonakshi Sinha when she wrote on social media: “Nobody nominated me. But I still took the challenge. Now I nominate you ALL. If you’ve already showered, skip the ice water. If you haven’t, go ahead by all means. BUT please go to www.als.org to donate.”
But many people from the city, on the other hand, are unimpressed with the challenge. “I’d do the ice bucket thing if only I could make some ice at home. I hate those power cuts!” says Deepu Joseph, a working professional. “There are some videos that are informative, but others are made just for the sake of it.”
“Can’t believe people are actually taking this lame challenge and wasting gallons of water. Charity is providing people drinking water, not pouring buckets of water on yourself,” says Mala Gurbani, another working professional.
Many insist that even though the cause is noble, why not just donate money? “Please be aware that Hyderabad faces a major deficit of both water and power. That’s an immediate crisis which will affect those suffering from ALS in the city,” wrote Aditya Mopur on his FB page.
