Intach to launch college heritage clubs
Clubs will sensitise youth to campaign for conservation
Chennai: The latest addition in the Madras Day celebration calendar is the launch of the heritage clubs by Intach (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) in ten colleges in the city. In order to inform college students about the importance of historical sites in the city and to teach them to preserve nature, Intach roped in colleges to start heritage clubs.
Intach members said that filmmaking, workshops, walk and talk in heritage sites and several other activities would be carried out through these clubs.
Speaking to DC, Intach convener Sujatha Shankar said the focus of these clubs is to spread awareness among young people about the heritage spots in Chennai. “Instead of just a handful of experts talking about the importance of protecting the heritage sites every time, these clubs would sensitise young people to campaign for conservation. They would first understand the value of heritage sites and work on documentation and conservation projects.”
She said that students would study about architecture of heritage building and materials used and other details of the buildings. “Already we have formed clubs in schools. But heritage clubs for college students would add support for conservation projects,” she said.
According to Tara Murali, co-convenor of Intach, these clubs would provide an opportunity for students to learn traditional art forms.
“Traditional folklore shows are not popular among young people these days. We want them to learn kolattam and other folk dances and preserve them. These clubs would give a platform for students who are interested in documenting the art forms,” she said. Ms Murali said that inauguration of the club would begin on Saturday at Anna university.
