‘My Sir saved me from child marriage’

Vazeerdid, currently a software engineer is all praise for her teacher M. Naziruddin
Krishnagiri: Little Vazeerdid, who was cheerfully frisking around in her school, was suddenly whisked away to become yet another child bride of Krishnagiri.
“After I finished class 8, my parents decided to get me married. But my Sir saved me from child marriage,” Vazeerdid recalls with overwhelming gratitude.
Now, a decade later, Vazeerdid, the daughter of a poor farm labourer, is a software engineer in Chennai, earning a fat pay in an IT company. “My Sir changed my life,” she smiles.
And the “honourable Sir” is the headmaster of Krishnangiri Urdu government middle school, M. Naziruddin, who has saved many Muslim girls in Krishnagiri from child marriages and motivated them to become engineers, doctors and teachers.
On Teacher’s Day, on September 5, Naziruddin will walk down the portals of the Rashtrapathi Bhavan in Delhi to receive the prestigious Best Teacher award.
For the last 35 years, Naziruddin has been striving hard in backward Krishnagiri district to bring down the dropout rate among Muslim girls.
“Muslim girls are not allowed to continue their education. I would identify those children and help them pursue higher education after persuading their parents,” 54-year-old Naziruddin told DC at his Lakshmipuram residence in Krishnagiri.
“The President's award is not just a recognition of his commitment, but an inspiration for all the teachers working in backward areas,” says his wife, Shaneenunisa, who is also a teacher.
