Parthiban’s daring act against piracy

25,000 pirated prints of his recently released film Kathai Thiraikadhai Vasanam Iyakkam
Chennai:“When a film gets good reviews a day or two after its release, before even pulling in more crowds to the theatres, the DVDs are out on the roads,” says Parthiban, who walked the streets of Burma Bazaar to crack down on piracy. The video was recently out and is going viral on social networking sites. He was shocked to see more than 25,000 prints of his recently released film Kathai Thiraikadhai Vasanam Iyakkam, which is getting rave reviews from the audience.
“Everyone knows that Burma Bazaar is famous for selling pirated films, but still no proper steps have been taken to curb these illegal activities. Seeing DVDs of recently released films in those bags, I was very upset about the loss producers incur in crores. Before we even make a profit, they release the films on DVDs. I went with an anti-piracy force, and they arrested two shopkeepers.
Still we couldn’t get hold of the owners as usual. From there I went all the way to Rangarajapuram, where a shopkeeper acted innocent, saying that he didn’t sell my film, but Suriya’s Anjaan was there. I told him that, I am fighting not only for my film, but all. 100 shops in Annanagar, which sold DVDs closed their shutters, when they saw me walking into their shops.
When I questioned them, they didn’t even regret their mistake, instead, got violent.” Parthiban also found out where the DVD was actually printed. “We came to know that Ashtalakshmi theatre in Annur (near Coimbatore) helped in this, and recorded it during in the morning of August 18. The theatre owner will be arrested soon.” he says.
