An appetising start
Director Anoop Kannan’s trailer of Homely Meals has everyone hungry for more!
When the video starts playing, it flashes old movie clippings of actors like Jayan, Mammootty, Mohanalal expressing their desire to watch something interspersed with a host declaring the arrival of the much awaited ‘something’ and the video concludes with the actors expressing joy. The video, which has become the talk of the town, is the teaser of an upcoming movie Homely Meals.
Anoop Kannan, director of the movie says it is an unexpected popularity.
“My second movie narrates the tale of an ordinary youth in Kochi and it features small time actors. Hence, we had to pique people’s curiosity with some innovative idea. That encouraged us to go for a creative concept for our teaser. But, using movie clippings was not a pre-planned concept. Ideas just added up as we worked on it. I had heard of a similar concept used for the movie Deshadanam wherein actors came up and said, ‘Njangal ithil abhinayichitilla, pakshe undayirnuenikil ennu agrahikkunnu’. That was one of the inspirations. As big names are not easily accessible for us, we clubbed clippings taken from their old movies. I am really happy about the response,” says Anoop gleefully.
Anoop has spent almost a year on this new movie after Jawan of Vellimala. He also believes that a well-narrated script is the backbone of a good film. According to him, Homely Meals is an effort to find the rare gems lying at the bottom of the sea. “There are many unknown yet talented people. You will see many such faces, for instance Rajesh Sharma, Thommi and Anwar Sherif, in my movie. Rajesh is an award-winning theatre artiste whereas Thommi is known as Paavangalude DJ. Anwar is a talented actor who has acted in albums,” explains Anoop further.
Anoop’s first movie which had Mammootty in the lead was released in 2012. Its teaser too was an innovative one, although it hadn’t blasted the box office. But, it was a cherished moment for Anoop as his maiden project was with a superstar. “He was the producer of Jawan of Vellimala, yet, he was very cooperative with us. It was very comfortable working with him.”Before directing independently, he had assisted director Lal Jose on a couple of movies. “Dedication and discipline at work is his forte. A movie set has people from all walks of life, with different character traits. Only a disciplined director can lead such a diverse team,” he says.
Anoop’s ambition is to make cinema that goes beyond generations. “It would be a movie portraying a novel theme on a larger canvas. But not a new generation movie as we understand it today.”
