Home department will book bootleggers under Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act

Thiruvananthapuram: The Home Department is gearing up to wean away alcoholic cops by sending them to correction centres and bootleggers will be booked under the stringent Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA).
“A two-pronged strategy is afoot to cut down the demand and supply. Student police cadets and Janamaithri police will start awareness campaigns in coordination with the health department. We will send alcoholics to de-addiction centres. Addicts in police department will be identified first,” said Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. Mr Chennithala said the department would moot amendment of Abkari Act and KAPPA if it would help in better enforcement. This was because liquor ban had been undone elsewhere by the proliferation of mafia and police-mafia nexus.
On the enforcement front, the department would modernize checkpoints on Tamilnadu and Karnataka border and union territory of Mahe. The police would destroy spirit and hooch stocks at mixing centres. There would be police reinforcements near Bevco outlets to check bulk buyers, especially on Saturdays as Sundays would be dry
