Move against plan panel symbolic
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed think tank set to replace Planning Commission in fact would be another “copy” of the panel with a new name. Top government officials claimed that the new body would be in the line with the existing Planning Commission and virtually function in a similar manner.
Some feel that the PM’s move came as he “personally was not too fond of Planning Commission during his tenure as Gujarat CM”, and also a symbolic move to end the “Nehruvian socialist” stamp on the government. Sources said, notwithstanding the “brainstorming”, to “evolve a new set up” in place of the plan panel, it has been indicated from the “top echelons” that whatever shape is given to the panel, the replaced institution would “continue to perform all the statutory role assigned to its previous avatar”.
