Mobile phones, cash seized from Cherlapally prisoners

Jails do not have body scanners prisoners or their kin might have smuggled them in
Hyderabad:Some inmates of Cherlapally jail were found using mobile phones inside the prison. In a surprise raid conducted by higher officials of the prisons department, three cell phones and Rs 1,500 in cash were seized from the inmates of on Saturday. While sources said that inmates have access to banned materials, officials denied the allegations.
Cherlapally prison officials are yet to confirm how the mobile phones reached the jail. Sources said that since jails do not have metal detectors and body scanners, jail officers rely on manual frisking, which causes such serious security breaches frequently. Though there were proposals to install mobile phone jammers in the prison, nothing has been done so far.
Some “rich” inmates have also alleged to have influenced the jail guards to get the phones inside. “Three mobile phones were found inside the jail, while we are yet to confirm who were using them and how the instruments reached the prison. We are conducting an inquiry into the matter,” said Cherlapalli jail superintendent K. Srinivas Rao.
Officials pointed out some ways through which the inmates might have got them inside the jail. “Somebody must have thrown them over the walls into the premises, or the inmates must have collected it while being taken to court and concealed it in their private parts, or they might have collected it secretly from visitors at the time of meetings,” said an official.
Meanwhile, experts said that it happened due to the negligence of jail officials. who are supposed to maintain vigil.
